Despite being in the shelter of the north side of Fishers Island the strong southwest wind was causing significant chop and swells to make it around the northwest point of the island. The anchorage was already rather uncomfortable and the wind was predicted to change to the north and become even more blustery. So we decided to head for the shelter of New London harbor on the mainland.
When we arrived we hailed two different marinas with no responses resulting. We saw no activity at the fuel docks so we just picked up a mooring and spent the night. I think that everyone had taken Columbus Day off of work. We were very happy to be secure in a harbor sheltered from the strong shifting winds. We spent the remainder of the day watching the bustle of the city harbor.
