VALLEY COVE

DAY #37 - AUGUST 18TH, 2009

We woke to a sunny, hot, hazy, day. The four of us rode in the dinghy of "Never Bored" to Southwest Harbor in order to catch the free Island Explorer Bus to the trailhead of the Cadillac South Ridge Trail. The bus service is free thanks to L.L. Bean and only involved one connection at Bar Harbor (what a great service!!).

Once we emerged above the tree line we could see the gently sloping shoulders of Cadillac Mountain.

This was a natural resting spot on the way up.

One could see the islands off the south shore of Mt Desert from this vantage point.

From the 1530 foot summit of Cadillac Mountain you have great views of Frenchman's Bay and Bar Harbor below.

We descended the mountain via the North Ridge Trail and we were lucky enough to hitch a ride back to Southwest Harbor where we rewarded ourselves with a lobster and clam feast. From our picnic table we could see the "Rachael B. Jackson" off loading day trippers. She is a replica of an 1890's coastal schooner. We finished up the day picking our way through the dense fog as we dinghied back to our boats in Valley Cove.
