DAY #29 - TENANTS HARBOR TO BIRCH & HIGH ISLANDS

AUGUST 9, 2007

We woke up to a crisp, cool, breezy day. Time to go sailing.

We left Tenants Harbor and sailed up Mussel Ridge Channel and nearly to Owls Head Lighthouse (near Rockland) before turning around and heading back to Birch and High Islands. We had to get there in time to collect mussels at low tide.

High Island has a long history of being a granite quarry center that shipped granite to all the major East coast cities (in the 1800s)for the construction of large buildings such as the Museum of Natural History and the New York Public Library. The large blocks and columns were transported by schooners.

We explored both islands. There was an abundance of wild roses and raspberries.
